Family Recreation Area

Newtown, Connecticut. Completed in 2011.

As part of the master plan P H Architects developed for a 30-acre pre-eminent equestrian facility, the Owners wanted to include a private family recreation area on the property. The site selected for the recreation area was surrounded by wetland soils. This necessitated that we develop an environmentally responsible plan to protect the surrounding wetlands and manage storm drainage to secure Town agency approvals.

The completed recreation area includes a basketball court, tennis court, putting green, amphitheater, swimming pool, playground area, pool house with a toilet room and changing area, gazebo with dining, barbeque and cooking equipment and a fire pit.

As a component of the overall master plan for the site, the structures were designed in the architectural vernacular of the equestrian facility located on the same property. We have continued the use of fieldstone as the farm icon in the buildings and as fieldstone walls. We also incorporated wood-shingled exteriors on the buildings for a traditional New England feel.
